I am reading "His Dark Materials" series by Philip Pullman. I am in the middle of the third book, The Amber Spy Glass. He has me hooked. The "world" he has created is intriguing, the characters are engaging, and the story interesting. If you look at the deeper themes, like Tolkien and CS Lewis, Pullman is raising questions about the humanity of humanity. Some will say the story attempts to undermine Christianity but it could also be seen as trying the find the "connecting spiritual threads" in all existence. Let me know what you think.
Check out Pullman's web site at http://www.philip-pullman.com/index.asp

i really really liked the Golden Compass, the first book in His Dark Materials. i listened to it on my iPod and i just couldn't turn it off. the characters are extremly intriguing and the story just kept getting better and better. Pullman just kept on adding new twists and turns with every chapter. it was amazing! definatly a must-read! as soon as i finish the book that i am reading right now, i will dive right into the second book, the Subtle Knife. thanks for the tip!
As you read the Subtle Knife let me know if you see Pulllman's social commentary on contemporary society. In particular, what might the knife stand for?
i will definatly let you know. i am only on page 4 however, so maybe when you get back!
we'll have to discuss your question in person, i am a little confused as to what you mean about the society.
